To keep our homes warm and reduce energy bills, we are encouraged to insulate our lofts and walls, but a double-glazed window allows ten times more heat to escape through it than a wall or roof. In fact during the winter, up to 50% of the heat in an average house will be lost through the windows. Conversely, in hot weather, thermal energy penetrates through the windows, turning our homes into hot houses and we burn more energy powering electric fans to cool down.
Not only do we need to manage these thermo-dynamic properties of our windows, but we need the ability to control their “daylighting” role. “Daylighting”, or the use of natural light to illuminate a room is crucial all year round as we try to maximise the sunlight coming in to light a room, whilst reducing the glare and extremes of light and shade which natural sunlight creates.
By finishing your windows with energy-efficient blinds or shutters, you will cut down the C02 emissions from your home, reduce your heating bills and manage the amount and intensity of natural daylight in your room. The Pole Company supplies a range of bespoke blinds and shutters to suit any style, shape or size of window, adding not only an energy-efficient layer, but an element of style, sophistication and comfort to any room.
For increased energy-efficiency, some blinds can be supplied with reflective coatings, multiple fabric layers and top-down or bottom-up operation, allowing for a choice of light and heat-control options. During the day, blinds can be closed to provide privacy and insulation, whilst also letting in the light. By diffusing the incoming light, a blind spreads the light more evenly through a room, cutting down glare and dark areas and reducing the need to rely on electric light.
Shutters have been used in English homes for over 200 years and are an established feature of British architecture. But modern shutters offer far more options for light control and insulation than their early counterparts. Louvres take into account the need to stay warm and private during the day, whilst also letting daylight into a room and promoting a feeling of security.
If ecological issues are as high on your agenda as they are on ours, you'll be pleased to know that we are committed to working with suppliers who use recycled metals and timber from managed forests in the production of their window-coverings. This means you can rest assured that our blinds and shutters are ecologically sound from production through to use.
